Medicare Open Enrollment: October 15 to December 7, 2026

During Medicare Open Enrollment you can:

  • Switch from one Medicare Advantage Plan to another
  • Move from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan, or from Medicare Advantage back to Original Medicare
  • Join, switch, or drop a Medicare drug plan (Part D)

Changes you make during this period take effect January 1, 2027, as long as the plan gets your request by December 7, 2026. Plans can change their costs, provider networks, and drug lists every year, so read the Annual Notice of Change your plan sends each fall and review your coverage before December 7.

If you are already in a Medicare Advantage Plan, there is also a Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period from January 1 to March 31. During it you can switch to another Medicare Advantage Plan or go back to Original Medicare.

Your Medicare options in plain words

Original Medicare (Part A and Part B)

Part A helps cover inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health care. Part B helps cover doctor visits, outpatient care, medical equipment, and many preventive services. You can use any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that takes Medicare.

Medicare Advantage (Part C)

Private plans approved by Medicare that combine Part A and Part B in one plan, and usually include drug coverage (Part D). Many plans use provider networks and may require approval before certain services. Each plan has a yearly limit on out-of-pocket costs for covered services. Costs, networks, and rules vary by plan.

Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)

Extra insurance from a private company that helps pay your share of costs in Original Medicare, like deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance. Medigap works only with Original Medicare. It does not pay costs in a Medicare Advantage Plan, and it does not include drug coverage, so people with Medigap usually add a separate Part D plan.

Medicare drug coverage (Part D)

Prescription drug coverage from private plans that follow Medicare rules. You can add a stand-alone Part D plan to Original Medicare, or get drug coverage inside many Medicare Advantage Plans.

Two common ways to put Medicare together

Neither path is right for everyone. The best fit depends on your doctors, prescriptions, travel, budget, and health needs. We walk through the trade-offs with you.

Medigap timing matters

Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period is a one-time, 6-month window. It starts the first month you have Medicare Part B and are 65 or older. During that window, a company can’t refuse to sell you a Medigap policy it offers because of health problems. After that window, you may not be able to buy a Medigap policy, or it may cost more. This window does not repeat every year.

New to Medicare?

Your Initial Enrollment Period generally lasts 7 months. It starts 3 months before the month you turn 65 and ends 3 months after it. If you delay Part B or Part D without other qualifying coverage, you may pay a late enrollment penalty for as long as you have that coverage. We help you understand your timing, especially if you are still working or have coverage through a spouse’s job.

Medicare and the Marketplace are separate

  • Medicare is not part of the Health Insurance Marketplace (Obamacare).
  • Once you have Medicare Part A or a Medicare Advantage Plan, you won’t qualify for Marketplace savings.
  • According to HealthCare.gov, it is against the law for someone who knows you have Medicare to sell you a Marketplace plan.
  • Turning 65 while on a Marketplace plan? Your Marketplace coverage does not end automatically when Medicare starts. Update your Marketplace application so you don’t pay for both. You can report your Medicare start date up to 3 months ahead.
  • Family members under 65 may still need Marketplace coverage. See our ACA / Obamacare page.

What we review with you

  • Whether your doctors and hospital work with the plans you’re considering
  • Your prescriptions and each plan’s drug list
  • How premiums, deductibles, copays, and out-of-pocket limits work in each option
  • Whether you travel or spend part of the year outside Florida
  • Whether your current coverage still fits for 2027

How we work with you

  • You choose how to talk: at our Lake Worth office or by phone.
  • We contact you only when you ask us to, through our form or by calling us.
  • A family member is welcome at your appointment.
  • There is no cost for the review, and you are never required to change your coverage.
